Extremely demanding cyclic operation and the highest torque requirements in the manufacture of chassis components
During the manufacture of aluminium chassis components – such as suspension arms, longitudinal and transverse control arms – extremely high impact torques with alternating directions of rotation occurred with every cycle.
The material is pre-formed, bent and punched in several operations during cyclic production. During material processing, adjustments in positioning, varying shaping and thickness settings resulted in parallel displacements of up to 35 mm, angular displacements of up to 3° and axial displacements of up to 10 mm, all of which were accommodated by the coupling.
Case study:
Extreme performance in the tightest of spaces, torque of 150,000 Nm
In the coupling, which has an outer diameter of 690 mm, the coupling elements incorporate steel-on-steel spherical plain bearings to cope with the harsh shock-loading conditions. In line with the high torque requirements, the coupling has a rated torque of 90,000 Nm and a peak torque of over 150,000 Nm. To cope with the torque peaks and shock torque encountered in the application, a friction-type shaft-hub connection using clamping sets was selected. With an overall length of just 370 mm without the corresponding clamping sets, the torsionally rigid coupling offers the required compact dimensions.
